Threads of Identity explores how identity, perspective, and belonging shape the stories we tell — and the stories we believe.
Participants look at the choices underneath storytelling: who gets heard, what gets left out, whose experiences are centred, and how a story changes when another perspective enters the frame.
Identity & Belonging
How culture, family, language, community, disconnection, pride, uncertainty, and change shape the way we understand ourselves and each other.
Media Literacy & Representation
How films, news, social media, and other forms of storytelling frame people and communities — and how to recognize what a story may be leaving out.
Personal Storytelling
How to move beyond broad labels and find the specific experiences, details, memories, and contradictions that make a personal story feel real.
Perspective & Story Choice
How the same event can become a very different story depending on who tells it, whose voice is centred, and what details are included.
Sessions combine discussion, real-world story examples, guided reflection, and creative exercises rather than simply talking about identity in the abstract.
Participants might examine a familiar story from another perspective, identify missing voices in media, map the different threads of their own identity, or develop a personal story rooted in lived experience.
For ages 6 through adulthood: Sessions are tailored to the age, experience, and needs of each group — from playful, creative exploration with younger participants to deeper conversations about identity, media, representation, and belonging with teens and adults.
Threads of Identity works especially well for students, educators, community groups, arts organizations, newcomer and cultural organizations, youth programs, and teams interested in storytelling, belonging, representation, or media literacy.
The focus and activities can shift depending on the group — but the central question stays the same:
What becomes possible when we look at more of the story?
